The Thumbnail Grid Gallery Layout For Artwork Images
These square-box, small fixed-aspect-ratio thumbnails offer a preview of images arranged in a simple grid of rows and columns. Depending on the page length, the layout can typically include three or more columns and as many rows as needed. The rows and columns of images adjust responsively to the viewer's screen size. Using smaller thumbnail images allows more artwork to be displayed on a single page, helping viewers scan and compare pieces quickly. The images on this page are shown in a square 1:1 aspect ratio, although other widths, shapes, aspect ratios, and sizes can also be used.

Lightbox vs. Artwork Detail Webpage
Clicking a thumbnail opens a larger image. This page shows two common ways to do that: the gallery above uses a “Lightbox,” and the gallery below shows an “Artwork Detail Page.”
Artwork Lightbox
The “Lightbox” option is simple and does not require building another webpage. This feature enlarges the image when clicked and typically includes a slideshow.
Artwork Detail Webpage
The “Artwork Detail Page” displays the image at a larger size and in its correct proportions, rather than a cropped 1:1 square. It can also include descriptions, supporting content, and additional images. This option requires building a separate page for each artwork, but the layout can be reused across all artwork detail pages.
